Radboud van Beekum – FM62 lounge chair

Radboud van Beekum – FM62 lounge chair

An original FM62 lounge chair designed by Radboud van Beekum for Pastoe, produced in the 1980s and situated within the Dutch postmodern and structuralist design discourse of the late 20th century. The chair is defined by its strict, geometric steel frame, constructed as a clear architectural cube. Within this rational structure, the black leather seat and backrest are suspended, creating a deliberate tension between rigid geometry and relaxed comfort. This contrast lies at the core of Van Beekum’s design philosophy, where form, construction, and use are made visually explicit. The leather has developed a deep, expressive patina over time, bearing visible signs of age and use that enhance the chair’s character and authenticity. The steel frame retains its original finish, underscoring the graphic, almost industrial presence of the design. Both conceptual and functional, the FM62 reflects the intellectual approach of Dutch design in the late 1970s and early 1980s, positioned between modernism and postmodernism. A strong statement piece that works equally well in contemporary interiors, architectural settings, or curated design collections.
