Charlotte Perriand – Cansado bench

Charlotte Perriand – Cansado bench

This rare “Cansado” bench was designed in 1958 by Charlotte Perriand as part of her commission for the newly built mining town of Cansado in Mauritania. Conceived for workers’ housing, the design embodies Perriand’s dedication to functional, honest furniture that could be produced with efficiency while maintaining architectural elegance. Executed in solid wood, the bench is defined by its clean lines and strong proportions, with a robust plank seat resting on block supports. The minimalist form reflects Perriand’s belief in essential design stripped of ornament, where materiality and function take precedence. Its warm, natural patina only enhances the timeless simplicity of the piece. A rare surviving example from this historic project, the Cansado bench represents Perriand’s ability to merge modernist ideals with human-centered design. Both utilitarian and sculptural, it is a collectible work that carries the spirit of mid-century design history into the present.
