An early “Egg” armchair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, Denmark, 1958. One of the most iconic designs of the twentieth century, the Egg chair was originally created for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, a landmark project where Jacobsen designed not only the building but also the interior architecture, furniture, and lighting. The chair features the sculptural, organic silhouette that made the design revolutionary at the time. Its enveloping shell provides both comfort and a sense of privacy, reflecting Jacobsen’s masterful ability to combine modernist functionality with expressive form. This example retains its original black leather upholstery, which has developed a soft and authentic patina over time, enhancing the character and depth of the piece. The chair is supported by the first edition four-star aluminium base, emphasizing the elegant contrast between the fluid upholstered shell and the refined industrial structure. Early examples of the Egg chair are increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly when they retain their original leather and early base, as seen here. The chair remains in very good vintage condition with a beautifully aged surface, presenting exceptionally well. A true collector’s piece and an enduring icon of Danish modern design, representing Arne Jacobsen’s groundbreaking vision for the SAS Royal Hotel and his lasting influence on twentieth-century furniture design.
